Breath in. And out. And in. And out.
To keep your whole digestive system healthy, it’s important to do some kind of activity that increases your heart rate and gets you breathing heavily.
Running. Swimming. Aerobics. All these things are brilliant. But walking can do the job too. Our scientists recommend that you should build up to walking 10,000 steps a day. That’s about five miles. Depending how long your legs are.
Here are five tips for better walking.
1. Try using an iPod or other MP3 player to add entertainment to your walk. Music can make you want to walk faster.
2. Set realistic goals – if you’ve been sedentary for a long time, start out slowly and aim for short distances
3. Pay attention to your posture – stand up straight, put your shoulders back, and take long strides
4. Don’t worry about how far you walk. The length of time you walk for is more important than the distance.
5. Increase the length of your sessions over time – aim for a five minute increase each time you walk
