How is the walking going? Are you managing to squeeze a few more walks into your daily routine?
To keep your gut healthy it’s really important to do some sort of activity every day that gets your heart pounding. And if you’re bored of walking, try running. Rowing. Dancing. Anything that gets you breathing heavily.
Here are some more tips for better walking.
• Once you can comfortably walk for 45 minutes a day, start to work on your distance and increase the difficulty. Incorporate the odd hill, for instance.
• Wear proper footwear. Sandals and flip-flops don’t support the muscles, tendons and joints in your foot
• Don’t carry weights when you walk. Any extra weight will throw your gait out of balance and is the leading cause of conditions that need orthopedic surgery.
• Walk to your target heart rate. To work out what it is, just subtract your age from 220 to find your maximum heart rate. Then multiply that number by 0.8 to find your target heart rate. Easy. For example, if you are 40 years old, your maximum heart rate is 180. Your target heart rate is 144.
